I did a week and a half trip that started in Auckland in 2004. We drove down along the coast to the bottom of the north island. Then took a ferry across to the south island and drove around the northern tip for a couple of days. Then ferry back to the north island and drove back to Auckland up the other side of the island. It was quite a trip. I have more photos that I will post soon.
